TheYolow Concerto Competition was created to provide high-level performance opportunities for the talented young musicians in the Lowcountry region. Awards vary from a solo performance with the Youth Orchestra of the Lowcountry to recitals and significant cash prizes to further their studies. A panel of professional musicians and the Music Director of YOLOW will select young musicians according to the process described below.
Process and Dates
- All Applications and Application Fee must be received no later than February 24, 2013
- Applications and CDs will be reviewed and screened by a committee that will invite a limited number of applicants to the Live Round of Auditions.
- Invitations to the Live Round of Competition will be sent no later than March 6th.
- The Live Round of Competition will be held on March 16, 2013.
Eligibility
Junior Category: (Through age 14 at the time of initial application deadline)
Strings, Woodwinds and Brass instrumentalists residing in Berkeley, Charleston, and Dorchester counties and all members of The Youth Orchestra of the Lowcountry are eligible to participate. All applications will be screened; submission of an application does not guarantee an audition.
Applicants will audition and compete during the Live Round according to three instrument sections: Brass, Woodwinds and Strings. Up to one winner will be selected from each section and one overall winner from each category.
Special Notes for Previous Winners: All previous winners must skip a year to reapply.
Senior Category: (Age 15- High School Seniors)
Strings, Woodwinds and Brass instrumentalists residing in Berkeley, Charleston, and Dorchester counties and all members of The Youth Orchestra of the Lowcountry are eligible to participate. All applications will be screened; submission of an application does not guarantee an audition.
Applicants will audition and compete according to three instrument sections: Brass, Woodwinds and Strings. Up to one winner will be selected from each section and one overall winner from each category.

Further Details:
- Applicants must audition and perform with a work that is for solo and orchestra
- All recordings must be of applicant with Live Accompanist
- Recording (and all competition performances) will be of Applicant playing FROM MEMORY
- Applicants must submit 3 copies of their recording in CD format. Please test your CDs on a CD player before submitting.
- Piano accompaniment on the CD and at the live auditions is required.
- All recordings, submissions, media, pictures, etc will be the Sole Property of the Youth Orchestra of the Lowcountry to use at their discretion and without limits.
- If selected, applicants agree to make themselves available for media interviews, photography, and any public relations. Yolow agrees to give fair notice for all media and PR opportunities.
- Yolow will do their best to obtain orchestral scores, parts, and rights for the winner’s performance. Yolow will cover the first $200US of these costs and the winner agrees to cover the balance. Applicants who are affected by this rule will be notified as soon as possible.
- The decision of the judges is final.
Awards and Prizes
- Select applicants will be invited to perform during a LIVE round Competition Recital
- $250 will be awarded to One Junior Category Applicant and ONE Senior Category Applicant
Grand Prize:
One winner, who can be a junior or senior participant, will be selected to perform their solo with the Youth Orchestra of the Lowcountry on
May 2013 during the 40th Anniversary Masterworks Celebration.
How to Submit your Application:
In a large envelope include:
- 1 complete YOLOW concerto Application (download HERE)
- 3 CDs
- Do NOT write on or otherwise mark your CDs
- Remember to test your CDs on a CD player before submitting
- $50 check to The Youth Orchestra of the Lowcountry
